An estimated 60,000 people gathered at the northwest corner of the Washington Monument on Saturday, Oct. 24, for a free benefit show by Baltimore’s Grammy-winning hardcore band, Turnstile.
The concert—which happened a month after D.C. punks Glitterer, Posición Unida, and Somebody’s Daughter played Sylvan Theater—raised more than $240,000 in donations for humanitarian aid in Gaza, Lebanon, and Sudan, shattering the band’s original goal of $100,000. Despite crowd control issues with U.S. Park Police (and their horses), the atmosphere remained peaceful—filled with families, music fans, and mosh pits. The historic D.C. hardcore spirit of Fugazi was somewhere smiling proudly.
